Iran Environment Chief: Attacks on Refineries and Oil Facilities Are Attacks on Safe Breathing
RoydadNaft – The head of the Department of Environment said that when Iran’s refineries and oil facilities are attacked, it is not only economic assets that burn. The security of people’s breathing is also put at risk.
According to Roydad Naft, Shina Ansari spoke on Monday, October 12, 2026, at a conference titled “Ecocide, the Silent War Crime.” The second and third imposed wars were not only a tension or a military conflict. Their destructive environmental consequences will remain for decades in the memory of this land’s soil, water, and air. Mass release of toxic materials into soil, water, and air, and the freeing of a huge volume of greenhouse gases, are direct consequences of these events, she said.
In attacks on fuel tanks and Assaluyeh facilities alone, in a very short span of a few days, about 904 tons of suspended particles, 4,700 tons of compounds, and more than 13,000 tons of sulfur oxides were released into the air, with many environmental risks.
The consequences of this war are not limited to those figures. The dimensions of this environmental crime are very deep. Any damage to industrial and energy infrastructure, water resources, and natural areas and habitats must be examined with a scientific, precise, and responsible approach, Ansari said.
If destruction of nature in war is left without assessment, accountability, and compensation, one cannot speak of justice. Environmental justice requires that the costs of destruction not fall on people who had the least role in creating the crisis.
