Iraq continues to be India’s second-largest oil supplier

Iraq continued to be India’s second-largest crude oil supplier during September.

RoydadNaft –  Iraq continued to be India’s second-largest crude oil supplier during September.

According to Kpler, a prominent source of market analytics for the energy and maritime sectors, Russia remained India’s top oil supplier in September, accounting for 33.3 percent of total oil imports, Shafaq News reported.

In September, India imported 1.6 million barrels of oil per day from Russia, a six percent decline compared to the 1.7 million barrels purchased in August.

India increased its imports from Iraq to 904,000 barrels per day last month, up from 730,000 barrels in August, placing second after Russia, with Saudi Arabia and the UAE ranking third and fourth, respectively.

India is the world’s third-largest oil consumer, relying on imports for more than 85 percent of its supplies. Indian refineries purchase oil from around 30 different countries.

Iraqi crude oil shipments to India declined by four percent during the first half of 2025 compared to the same time in 2024.

Between January and June 2025, Iraq’s crude oil exports to India averaged 860,000 barrels per day, compared to 900,000 barrels per day during the same period in 2024.

In early 2025, Indian refineries switched to non-Russian oil after the government notified them of US sanctions weeks before they were announced.

Western countries, notably the United States, have tightened sanctions on Moscow, disrupting global oil trade and pushing clients of low-cost Russian oil to find new suppliers to maintain their purchases.
