Iran’s Shahid Tondgooyan Petrochemical Saves Over $3.3 Million Annually Through Steam Recovery Project

Shahid Tondgooyan Petrochemical Company saved over 1 trillion rials annually by reusing low‑pressure steam, cutting steam use 25%, water 360,000 m³, and electricity 6,500 MWh.

RoydadNaft –  Mehdi Shakeri, Head of Technical Services at Shahid Tondgooyan Petrochemical Company, announced that systematic energy audits and continuous technical monitoring have enabled the complex to identify and eliminate energy waste, successfully implementing dozens of optimization projects in recent years.

Speaking to Roydad Naft, Shakeri described the LPS steam recovery and injection project as the flagship achievement in steam management. Combined with the inspection and overhaul of more than 1,800 steam traps, the initiative has slashed overall steam consumption by 25% compared to initial start-up levels and delivered annual financial savings of more than 1 trillion rials.

In water management, the company’s Reuse, Recycle, and Recovery programs have saved over 360,000 cubic meters annually. Key initiatives include blowdown recovery from cooling towers, optimization of RO water consumption, a 15% reduction in service and potable water networks, and full mechanization of the cooling exchanger network.

On the electricity front, measures such as optimized cooling and electro-fan load management, capacitor bank upgrades in polymer units, installation of 18 smart meters, and deployment of a SCADA system have yielded annual savings exceeding 6,500 megawatt-hours.

Shakeri also highlighted the company’s move toward renewables: a 17 kW solar array has been installed on-site, and the complex is participating in the construction of a 10 MW solar power plant expected to generate 21,000 MWh of clean electricity per year.

Since 2011, Shahid Tondgooyan has operated a dedicated Energy Management Unit and maintained ISO 50001 certification, embedding energy efficiency into its core strategy. These efforts have not only slashed production costs but have also strengthened Iran’s culture of responsible consumption and environmental stewardship in the petrochemical sector.
