Iran’s Esfahan Refinery LPG recovery project reaches 96%

Iran’s Esfahan Oil Refining Co says its LPG recovery project – set to add $8M annual revenue – has hit 96% completion and will start up before year-end despite sanctions delays.

RoydadNaft –  Iran’s Esfahan Oil Refining Company announced Wednesday that its liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) recovery project from isomerization unit off-gases has reached 96% physical progress and is on track for commissioning by the end of the current Iranian calendar year.

Pejman Ghasemi, the refinery’s projects manager, said the facility will process approximately 14,000 m³/h of sweet off-gas currently burned as fuel, yielding 3.6 t/h of LPG and 3.8 t/h of raw hydrogen.

The recovered LPG will be sent to existing fractionation units, while hydrogen will feed the refinery’s PSA purification system.

Thanks to the higher market value of LPG versus the natural gas it replaces, the project is projected to generate an extra $8 million in annual revenue for the refinery.

Remaining mechanical, piping and electrical works are underway. Despite financing challenges and international sanctions have caused, Ghasemi confirmed the unit will be operational before the end of 2025.

The initiative is part of broader efforts at Iran’s second-largest refinery to maximise product value and minimise waste streams.
