Iran and Azerbaijan Review Roadmap for Expanding Oil and Gas Cooperation
RoydadNaft – Iran’s Minister of Petroleum said the two countries have reviewed existing opportunities to expand energy cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Azerbaijan and agreed to pursue areas of mutual understanding through joint working groups.
According to Roydad Naft, Mohsen Paknejad said on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, following his third meeting with Shahin Mustafayev, Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, that the talks focused on the key areas of cooperation between the two countries. He said that, given the longstanding relations between Iran and Azerbaijan and the constructive cooperation established in recent years, there is a favorable basis for further expanding bilateral ties, particularly in the economic sector.
He noted that the meeting focused primarily on energy cooperation between the two countries, adding: “Given Azerbaijan’s considerable potential, we held detailed discussions and exchanged views on energy trade and other areas of cooperation.”
The Iranian minister said it was agreed that these issues would be pursued through working groups designated by both sides with the aim of reaching concrete results.
The meeting between Iran’s Minister of Petroleum and Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister was held after the two officials had previously met in Tehran in September-October 2024 and January-February 2025. At those meetings, the two sides had also emphasized examining ways to expand energy cooperation through a joint working group.
Energy relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have a history spanning several years. The two countries’ geographic location along the Caspian Sea, their proximity to regional energy markets, and Iran’s access to an extensive transmission network provide a basis for expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
