GasLog Says LNG Tanker Stable After Incident Near Strait of Hormuz

Greek shipping company GasLog reported that its liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier GasLog Shanghai remains stable following an incident while exiting the Strait of Hormuz, with all crew members safe and accounted for.

RoydadNaft –  A liquefied natural gas vessel operated by Greek shipper GasLog was confirmed stable after an incident that occurred while leaving the Strait of Hormuz, the company said on Monday. All personnel on board are safe.

According to a statement from GasLog, an “incident” took place on its GasLog Shanghai LNG tanker on July 31. The company did not provide further details regarding the nature of the incident or whether the vessel or its cargo sustained any damage.

“Gas Log LNG Services immediately activated their emergency plan, notified all relevant authorities, and is currently assessing the condition of the vessel and assuring the safety of our people,” the statement said.

Ship-tracking data from analytics firms Kepler and LSEG show that the GasLog Shanghai loaded an LNG cargo at Qatar’s Ras Laffan export terminal between July 27 and 28. The vessel was observed inside the Strait of Hormuz on July 31 before reappearing outside the waterway on August 2. It is currently positioned off Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, just outside the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical shipping corridor for oil and LNG exports from Persian Gulf producers. Nearly one-fifth of global LNG supplies pass through the waterway, including the majority of shipments from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Iran has largely restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the conflict with the United States in February, contributing to higher energy prices and broader inflationary pressures.

On Saturday, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported two maritime incidents off Oman, including one in which a tanker was struck by an unknown projectile near the Musandam Peninsula. On Sunday, UKMTO received a report from the master of another tanker regarding an explosion in close proximity to the vessel approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. The vessel and its crew were reported safe.

The previous reported incident involving an LNG tanker near the Strait of Hormuz occurred on July 7, when a projectile strike on the Qatari vessel Al Rekayyat caused a fire in its engine room and led to the evacuation of the crew.
