Pakistan in Contact with Iran to Secure Energy Supplies: Petroleum Minister

Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister said his country plans to increase imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Iran, adding that Tehran and Islamabad remain in close contact over the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project and efforts to secure affordable energy supplies for Pakistan.

RoydadNaft –Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister said his country plans to increase imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Iran, adding that Tehran and Islamabad remain in close contact over the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project and efforts to secure affordable energy supplies for Pakistan.

Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said Pakistan and Iran share “brotherly and close neighborly relations” and should capitalize on each other’s capabilities.

Commenting on the long-delayed Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, Malik said the dispute is currently before an arbitration court in Paris. However, he stressed that both countries are seeking to resolve the issue bilaterally in light of their longstanding ties and friendly relations.

“We currently import between 4,000 and 5,000 tonnes of LPG from Iran every day, and we have now decided to increase these imports,” the minister said.

He added that technical teams from both countries remain in close contact to explore ways of meeting Pakistan’s energy needs through cost-effective supplies from Iran, noting that the government in Islamabad will make the necessary decisions.

In late November 2025, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the need for a practical and mutually acceptable solution regarding the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, citing his country’s growing energy demand. He welcomed technical negotiations held in Islamabad and said Pakistan looked forward to continuing the talks in Tehran.
