Iran’s Oil Minister Hints at Possible Revival of Supreme Energy Council

Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad stated that the formation of a “Supreme Energy Council” is under consideration to improve coordination among various energy sectors in the country.

RoydadNaft –  Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad stated that the formation of a “Supreme Energy Council” is under consideration to improve coordination among various energy sectors in the country.

Speaking to reporters, Paknejad said the establishment of such a council “is likely in the future” as a strategic step toward integrated and unified management of Iran’s energy policy.

The remarks came during a press briefing on the newly created Strategic Energy Optimization and Management Organization, headed by recently appointed Vice President Esmaeil Saqab Isfahani.

Paknejad clarified that while the existing Fuel Conservation Organization (currently under the Oil Ministry) will operate in coordination with and effectively beneath the new entity, the Oil Ministry itself will not be subordinated to it. He emphasized that the ministry’s core responsibilities — crude oil and natural gas production, processing, distribution, sales, and exports — extend far beyond energy optimization.

The potential revival of a Supreme Energy Council has long been discussed in Iranian policy circles as a mechanism to align the activities of the Oil Ministry, Power Ministry, Renewable Energy Organization, and other stakeholders under a single high-level decision-making body.

No specific timeline for the council’s establishment was provided.
