Russia: India will keep buying oil from wherever it is cheapest and most profitable
RoydadNaft – The Kremlin stated on Monday that India will continue to purchase oil from any source that offers the most commercially advantageous terms, underscoring New Delhi’s pragmatic approach to energy security.
The remark came days after President Vladimir Putin personally assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi of uninterrupted Russian crude and fuel supplies during a phone call on Friday.
“India will buy oil where it is profitable for India – that is the position India has always taken,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
Putin and Modi also agreed to deepen bilateral trade, investment and defence cooperation, according to statements from both sides.
India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, has emerged as one of the biggest buyers of Russian seaborne crude since Western nations imposed sanctions on Moscow over Ukraine in 2022. Russian oil, often sold at a discount, now accounts for roughly 40% of India’s total crude imports.
Indian refiners, led by state-run and private giants such as Indian Oil Corp and Reliance Industries, have consistently defended the purchases on commercial grounds, rejecting Western calls to curb imports from Russia.
Moscow has repeatedly described the India-Russia energy partnership as mutually beneficial and immune to external political pressure.
