Oil prices fell on Friday, October 9, 2026, as concerns about oil supplies from the Middle East eased after U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States would not attack Iran before next month\u2019s midterm elections. The remarks came amid what Trump described as productive talks aimed at ending a war that has disrupted global energy markets.<\/p>\n

By 8:19 a.m. GMT, Brent crude futures had fallen $1.68, or 1.61%, to $102.60 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures dropped $1.31, or 1.43%, to $90.18 a barrel.<\/p>\n

On a weekly basis, Brent crude was on track to post a gain after settling 4% higher on Thursday, October 8, while WTI was headed for a slight decline.<\/p>\n

Tamas Varga, an analyst at PVM Oil Associates, said President Trump\u2019s pledge not to resume military attacks on Iran before the midterm elections, along with China\u2019s resumption of refined petroleum product exports, was putting downward pressure on prices.<\/p>\n

\u201cYet, the escalation of hostilities in the Persian Gulf and around the Red Sea has dashed hopes that rising oil exports from the region will be sustainable. As a result, a prolonged decline in oil prices in the foreseeable future seems unlikely,\u201d Varga said.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, October 8, Trump said Washington was engaged in \u201cproductive discussions\u201d with Iran. He also said no attack was planned before the U.S. congressional midterm elections on November 3, 2026, following media reports that he was considering a strike before the vote.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s Tasnim news agency reported the same day that Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran was reviewing Washington\u2019s response to an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe prospect of easing tensions still needs to be reinforced by concrete progress in negotiations and improvements in shipping safety through the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d said Linh Tran, an analyst at XS.com.<\/p>\n

The United States is continuing to apply economic pressure on Iran in an effort to end the war, which is now in its eighth month. On Thursday, October 8, Washington imposed sanctions targeting individuals, networks and 17 vessels allegedly involved in transporting Iranian crude oil, petroleum products and petrochemicals.<\/p>\n

Oil prices have been volatile this week as threats to shipping in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz have increased in October. Before the war, the strategic waterway carried shipments equivalent to about 20% of global oil and fuel supplies.<\/p>\n

The war in the Middle East and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine have disrupted supplies of refined petroleum products, including gasoline, jet fuel and, in particular, diesel.<\/p>\n

China, the world\u2019s largest oil importer, is set to resume refined fuel exports following a brief suspension during its Golden Week holiday. The move could help ease tight market conditions to some extent, Reuters reported on Friday, October 9, citing sources.<\/p>\n

The oil market is also contending with Hurricane Isaias in the Gulf of Mexico. According to the U.S. Marine Minerals Administration, producers in the region had shut in approximately 1.3 million barrels per day of oil production as of Thursday, October 8, representing 62.9% of current output, because of the storm.<\/p>\n
