Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Rep. Ashley Hinson of Iowa, who is running for Senate, and Mike Rogers, the Republican Senate nominee in Michigan, have urged the Trump administration to impose a diesel export ban.

Sullivan said in a statement that fuel produced in America should be used by Americans at home. Diesel prices are extremely high, he said, and he wants a temporary halt to U.S. diesel exports so storage can be rebuilt before winter and the interests of American families and Alaskans put first.

Energy officials warn of risks

Trump’s support for a ban has met resistance from energy officials in his own administration, who warn it could raise fuel prices on the coasts and cut supply to European allies.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright said last week that a ban would pile up surplus diesel on the U.S. Gulf Coast, encourage domestic refineries to cut runs, and quickly reduce gasoline output.

“If you put a blockage in the supply chain, production drops quickly and you end up short of supply,” Wright said. “We need more supply, not less.”

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the ban is unlikely to lower petroleum-product prices and could trigger retaliation from energy-exporting countries that states such as California rely on for part of their energy.

Oil-industry groups have also opposed the ban. Todd Staples, president of the Texas Oil and Gas Association (TXOGA), said the move would seriously hurt domestic jobs, create fuel shortages at home, and hand power to China and Russia by forcing U.S. allies to import from those countries to meet their needs.

Even if a diesel export ban appeared to lower prices temporarily on the U.S. Gulf Coast, it would further tighten supply to Europe, a region already short of diesel and heavily dependent on U.S. exports.

Jim Mitchell, director of oil trading analysis at consultancy Wood Mackenzie, said the step would be very damaging for some of America’s important allies.

[47,44,46,36,35
["post-18823","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-breaking-news","category-fuel","category-international","category-lastnews","category-topnews
["GET
