RoydadNaft – <\/a><\/span>\u00a0Output at Iran\u2019s South Azadegan oil field has risen from about 130,000 barrels a day at the start of the 14th government to more than 183,000 barrels a day, Petroleum Engineering and Development Company (PEDEC) Managing Director Nasrollah Zarei said, as the company completed 320,000 barrels a day of processing capacity and advanced other development work.<\/p>\n

Phase 1 of South Azadegan development is finished, Zarei told Rooydad Naft. Phase 2 of the integrated North and South Azadegan development entered engineering studies, tendering, and procurement of drilling rigs, downhole pumps and well-completion equipment in April 2026.<\/p>\n

Associated-gas processing facilities are another major piece of the project. After treatment, South Azadegan associated gas will move to the NGL 3200 unit. Zarei said he hoped the first gas train would enter service by the end of the Iranian year in March 2027.<\/p>\n

Combined North and South Azadegan output was about 237,000 barrels a day when the project was handed to the new contractor, he said.<\/p>\n

In Phase 1, PEDEC drilled and commissioned 203 wells and brought online what Zarei called the country\u2019s largest oil processing unit, with capacity of 320,000 barrels a day. Completing that unit raised cumulative oil processing capacity in the West Karoun area to about 820,000 barrels a day.<\/p>\n

Sohrab development with environmental limits<\/p>\n

On the Sohrab oil field, Zarei said field development and environmental protection were being pursued together. Project design was revised to reduce intervention in the Hoor al-Azim wetland ecosystem. After studies, design changes and coordination with the relevant agencies, an environmental permit was issued and the project can proceed.<\/p>\n

The aim, he said, is that Sohrab not be only an oil-output project but an example of responsible development that creates economic value while protecting Hoor al-Azim and meeting environmental requirements.<\/p>\n

West Karoun power plant feeding the grid<\/p>\n

The 435-megawatt West Karoun power plant was built mainly to supply West Karoun oil fields. Development projects need only about 100 megawatts, Zarei said, so a large share of output can be sent to the national grid. Surplus power has been delivered to the grid since 2021, averaging about 300 megawatts.<\/p>\n

Debottlenecking and infrastructure<\/p>\n

At Cheshmeh Khosh, PEDEC installed a 30,000-barrel-a-day mobile desalting unit in a short period to ease a production bottleneck. Field capacity then reached about 125,000 barrels a day. Oil-transfer capacity on the project rose from about 300,000 barrels a day to a nameplate 1 million barrels a day.<\/p>\n

Zarei said PEDEC did not cut mandated output even though many of the fields it manages are shared, and development continued during wartime. About 30 drilling rigs were active across projects and were halted for only about a week on safety grounds before work resumed.<\/p>\n

Foreign partners<\/p>\n

Chinese companies still have room to keep investing, he said, including in further development of Yadavaran and other fields if they choose. Operations and maintenance at Yadavaran are still handled by a subsidiary of the Chinese developer, and field output did not fall despite wartime conditions.<\/p>\n

Two major contracts with Russian companies are under way on the Aban and Paydar West developments and on Cheshmeh Khosh, Dalpari and Paydar East. Zarei said development and output growth on those fields have been satisfactory.
