The new company aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and accelerate a strategic shift from commodity petrochemicals toward specialty and higher-value-added materials.

South Korea’s petrochemical industry has taken a major step toward structural restructuring with the official launch of H&L Advanced, a newly integrated company formed through the merger of HD Hyundai Chemical and Lotte Daesan Petrochemical.

The launch ceremony was held at the Daesan petrochemical complex in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, with around 180 executives and employees attending the event.

H&L Advanced was established as part of the Daesan No. 1 restructuring project, which was designed to address structural challenges facing South Korea’s petrochemical sector and strengthen the competitiveness of the Daesan complex.

The integrated company is jointly controlled by HD Hyundai Oilbank and Lotte Chemical, with each holding a 50 percent stake. The new company combines the refining and petrochemical capabilities of the two groups with the aim of optimizing operations across the entire value chain, from feedstock procurement to product manufacturing.

H&L Advanced plans to improve production efficiency, strengthen cost competitiveness and maximize operational synergies by integrating the two companies’ production systems and leveraging their respective strengths.

As part of the restructuring plan approved by the South Korean government, the company is also set to reduce commodity petrochemical production. Lotte Chemical’s Daesan naphtha cracking center, with annual production capacity of approximately 1.1 million tonnes, is scheduled to be shut down over the next three years.

The restructuring will also involve scaling back operations at low-margin commodity facilities, while the company gradually expands its portfolio toward specialty materials and environmentally friendly products.

The strategic shift is intended to reduce exposure to oversupplied commodity petrochemical markets and improve profitability by increasing the proportion of higher-value-added products.

The launch of H&L Advanced is being viewed as a key test of South Korea’s broader efforts to restructure its petrochemical industry, which has been facing persistent oversupply, intensifying global competition and pressure on margins.

The Daesan integration is expected to serve as a potential model for further consolidation and restructuring initiatives in other major South Korean petrochemical hubs, including Yeosu and Ulsan.

HD Hyundai Chemical and Lotte Daesan Petrochemical have completed their integration to establish H&L Advanced, marking the first major restructuring case in South Korea’s petrochemical industry.
