U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained 77 cents, or 1 percent, to reach $81.11 a barrel.

According to Roydad Naft, oil prices recovered with a one-percent gain on Tuesday after falling in the previous session. The rebound was driven by concerns over ongoing supply risks in the Middle East, as a diplomatic resolution to the U.S.-Iran war that has disrupted shipments still appears unlikely.

Front-month Brent futures were up $1.12, or 1.3 percent, at $84.89 a barrel as of 03:55 GMT. This followed a 7 percent drop in the previous session that had taken prices to their lowest level in three weeks.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also rose 77 cents, or 1 percent, to $81.11 a barrel. The benchmark had fallen more than 5 percent in the prior session, reaching its lowest level in nearly a week.

Prices had declined after U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he would refrain from new attacks for as long as negotiations continued toward ending the war with Iran and resolving claims over control of the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway, which connects Persian Gulf oil producers to global markets, carried roughly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and natural gas shipments before the conflict.

However, on Monday Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei rejected Trump’s claim, stating that no negotiations with the United States are underway and that no meetings have been scheduled.

Analysts at ING wrote in a note: “The scale of the sell-off looks excessive given that significant uncertainty remains. We have been in this situation repeatedly before, only for things to fall apart. With Iran denying that any talks are taking place and Trump’s warnings if an agreement is not reached, there is clearly ample room for tensions to escalate again.”

The dispute over Hormuz remains the main sticking point in the talks. Washington says the understanding reached in June required Iran to reopen the waterway, while Iran maintains that the text of the understanding explicitly preserved its authority over it.

Barclays analysts reported that net exports of crude oil and petroleum products through the strait averaged 4.2 million barrels per day in the week ending July 31, up from 3.2 million barrels per day the previous week.

In the Red Sea, six Saudi-flagged very large crude carriers recently diverted southward around Africa from the Gulf of Aden, while two tankers carrying Saudi oil transited the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, shipping data showed on Monday. Traffic through the key Persian Gulf waterways of Bab el-Mandeb and the Strait of Hormuz remained largely unchanged at the start of the week.

The Strait of Hormuz continues to pose risks for vessels. On Tuesday the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported an incident 20 nautical miles (37 kilometers) northeast of Khasab, Oman, after a cargo ship broadcast on VHF Channel 16 that it had been struck by an unidentified projectile.

Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, said: “While the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis has not completely halted energy flows, it has lengthened voyage times, raised insurance costs, and occasionally forced route diversions. Combined with the Strait of Hormuz, the dual chokepoint risk remains in the market and prevents the full removal of the geopolitical risk premium in oil.”

Brent crude futures rose $1.12, or 1.3 percent, to settle at $84.89 a barrel.
