U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 34 cents (0.4%) to $82.15 per barrel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to Roydad Naft, oil prices remained largely unchanged on Monday and retreated from their earlier highs. Hopes for the resumption of U.S.-Iran talks were tempered by the Yemeni Houthis\u2019 announcement of a naval blockade around Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>Benchmark prices had earlier hit their highest levels in more than a month amid growing concerns over disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n<p>Brent crude futures were up 18 cents (0.2%) at $88.28 per barrel at 12:22 GMT, after earlier reaching $91.42 \u2014 the highest level since June 1.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>U.S. WTI crude fell 34 cents (0.4%) to $82.15, after previously climbing to $85.39 \u2014 its highest level since June 2.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A senior Iranian official told Reuters on Monday that mediators had presented Iran with a proposal to de-escalate the conflict with the United States. The proposal includes a 10-day ceasefire aimed at finding ways to revive last month\u2019s temporary agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to restart dialogue between the U.S. and Iran put downward pressure on prices, according to Empire FX research analyst.<\/p>\n<p>Sharp Drop in Oil Tanker Traffic in the Persian Gulf<\/p>\n<p>However, traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen sharply, with only a limited number of vessels passing through.<\/p>\n<p>Prices had previously extended significant gains from last week, driven by recent U.S.-Iran clashes and restrictions on oil transport through the Strait.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions in the Middle East escalated over the weekend. The U.S. carried out its ninth consecutive night of strikes on Iran, while its allies Kuwait and Bahrain reported further Iranian attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Monday that two oil tankers became immobilized after explosions while attempting to navigate the \u201cunsafe southern route\u201d of the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC claimed that U.S. forces had encouraged them to use this route. Reuters said it could not immediately verify these incidents.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) wrote in a note: \u201cThe supply narrative has turned more negative. The expected recovery in shipping has effectively stalled, and volumes through the Strait of Hormuz have dropped to single-digit figures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data from an analytical body shows that only four vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, down from eight the previous day. At least three product tankers and one very large crude carrier (VLCC) have entered the Strait since Friday to load oil.<\/p>\n<p>Gulf countries raised their crude oil and condensate exports in the first half of Tir (July) to the highest level since before the start of the Iran war. However, with the escalation of fighting, flows through the Strait of Hormuz have slowed.<\/p>\n<p>The collapse of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire has once again heightened concerns about energy supplies through the Strait.
