RoydadNaft – <\/a><\/span>\u00a0Addressing a rally in Assam\u2019s Numaligarh after inaugurating and laying foundation stones for projects worth over Rs 12,000 crore, Modi said that with India emerging as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, the country is dependent on foreign nations for crude oil and gas.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo change this, the focus has to be on meeting our energy requirements. We are working on becoming self-reliant in meeting our energy needs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Modi said the country is making efforts to discover new reserves of crude oil and gas, while enhancing its green energy capabilities.<\/p>\n

The PM also highlighted the \u2018Samudra Manthan\u2019 initiative announced by him from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Independence Day, which will focus on exploring deep-sea reserves of oil and gas.<\/p>\n

The country is taking rapid strides in the field of green energy and renewable power generation, he asserted.<\/p>\n

\u201cA decade ago, India lagged in solar power production. But today, we are among the top five countries globally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ethanol is a major alternative source of energy, and the newly inaugurated bamboo-based bioethanol refinery at Numaligarh will significantly benefit farmers and tribals, the prime minister said.<\/p>\n

The bioethanol refinery will source the raw materials locally, and around Rs 200 crore will be pumped into the rural economy annually through this plant, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we are making ethanol from bamboo. But, we must not forget the time when the Congress government jailed people for cutting bamboo, a plant which is an integral part of the life of tribals. Our government lifted this ban,\u201d Modi said.<\/p>\n

The polypropylene plant, the foundation for which was also laid by Modi, will greatly benefit the local economy, too, the PM said.<\/p>\n

Just as Assam is known for its traditional \u2018Gamosa\u2019 and its renowned \u2018Eri\u2019 and \u2018Muga\u2019 silk, the state\u2019s identity will now also include textiles made from polypropylene, the prime minister said.<\/p>\n

Modi said in today\u2019s era, energy and semiconductors were the two key drivers for \u2018Atmanirbhar Bharat\u2019, underscoring that Assam has an important role to play in these sectors.<\/p>\n

He also made mention of the Rs 27,000-crore semiconductor plant being set up in Morigaon district, which is a part of the country\u2019s semiconductor mission.<\/p>\n

Taking a dig at the Congress, the prime minister alleged that it was responsible for insurgency and unrest in Assam.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Congress also ignored the heritage and icons of Assam. But, the BJP brought development and gave recognition to the state\u2019s heritage,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n

Modi also claimed that Assam was facing a demographic challenge due to Congress\u2019 backing of infiltrators for votes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Assam government is evicting encroachers, and providing deprived people land rights,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He hailed the Assam government for \u2018Mission Basundhara\u2019, under which lakhs of families have received land pattas.<\/p>\n

The land rights of the Ahom, Koch-Rajbongshi and Gorkha communities have been recognised in certain tribal areas, and they have been included in the list of protected classes, he said.<\/p>\n

Accusing the Congress of neglecting the poor and downtrodden, Modi said, \u201cWe are taking steps for the welfare of tribals, who were relegated during the Congress rule.\u201d The BJP government\u2019s commitment is to make Assam a hub of trade and tourism, he added. PTI SSG RBT<\/p>\n
