RoydadNaft – <\/a><\/span>\u00a0The head of Iran\u2019s National Petrochemical Company stressed the importance of encouraging downstream producers to manufacture environmentally friendly plastics, saying the approach must be a priority in the industry\u2019s development plans.<\/p>\n

Hassan Abbaszadeh, the company\u2019s CEO, made the remarks while discussing the sixth round of global negotiations on ending plastic pollution (INC5.2), attended by representatives from 184 countries, according to the company\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith advances in technology and growing environmental awareness, it is expected that new, eco-friendly technologies will increasingly be used in the petrochemical sector,\u201d Abbaszadeh said. \u201cCollaboration among industry, governments and research institutions can accelerate both development and commercialization of these technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said protecting the environment while expanding the petrochemical industry could lead to a sustainable future.<\/p>\n

Abbaszadeh noted that delegates at the U.N.-backed talks highlighted two main differences over how to tackle plastic pollution: developed nations pushed for a comprehensive plastics lifecycle framework, including restrictions on polymer production and financial obligations for producing countries, while developing nations emphasized waste management strategies and support for voluntary national initiatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn any agreement, unnecessary restrictions on essential technologies and products must be avoided,\u201d he said, adding that the principle of \u201ccommon but differentiated responsibilities\u201d should guide commitments and reflect each country\u2019s capabilities.<\/p>\n

He said participants agreed to continue negotiations toward a comprehensive treaty at another session, likely in the first half of next year. \u201cAny decision-making must also consider the interests of petrochemical producers worldwide,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The sixth round of talks, held in August in Geneva, ended without significant results due to sharp disagreements over the draft text proposed by the chair of the International Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
